Everyone agreed that John Tsui was a naughty boy. He had a bad temper and did not study hard at school. His father paid for a private teacher to teach him at home. But john was rude to his teacher. His teacher said he did not want to teach him anymore. John’s father tried to find another teacher, but it was not easy to do so.

At last, a teacher who had just come from Singapore agreed to teach him. John’s father was very pleased. He sent for John to come and meet his new teacher. John was very rude. He took no notice of his new teacher and left the room without saying a word. The next day, john arrived late for his first lesson. He hoped this would make his teacher angry. But his teacher did not seem to mind. The next day, he was again late. This time, his teacher was playing the piano.

“can you teach me to play the piano?” he asked his teacher.

“Yes, if you really want to learn,” his teacher replied.

After that, his teacher gave him piano lesson twice a week. John was really very clever and he did not need much teaching.

In a short while, he could play quite well.

“Can you teach me anything else?” he asked his teacher.

“I don’t know what you would like to learn,” his teacher said. “Perhaps you can teach me something?”

“I only know how to box,” John replied. “If you want to learn, I can teach you.”

John asked his teacher to stand up. As soon as he did so, he tried to hit his fist. But his teacher was too quick for him. He caught hold of his arm and held it tight. John could not move. He had to ask his teacher to forgive him. He promised that he would study harder in future.

“If you want to study harder,” his teacher said, “It is not enough to learn from one man. You must learn from many men.”

“How can I do that?” John asked.

His teacher pointed to the books in front of him. “You must study hard and read as many books as you can. Each book contains knowledge. If you do that, you will soon be able to learn many new things for yourself.

John studied hard after that. When he grew up, he became a very famous man.

The Moon God Story

Chang O did not live alone for very long. She soon caught cold and began to cough. One day, she coughed up the “Pill of every lasting life”, Which changed into a white rabbit. She was very pleased that the rabbit came to live with her because she did not feel so lonely. Later on, Chang O and the rabbit were joined by an old man as well. The old man had been  sent to the moon by a fairy for doing something wrong. He had been ordered by the fairy to cut down all the trees on the moon. This was more difficult that it sounds. As soon as he cut down one tree, another grew in its place.

Chang O still thought of her husband every day. But there seemed to be no way for her to see him again.

One day, Hou I was carried off in a storm to the palace of the Queen Mother of the west. The Queen Mother’s husband gave him a cake and a magic ring.

The Sun God Story

“Eat this cake,” he said. “You will able to live on the sun without feeling the heat.”

Hou I did so. He flew straight up to the sun. The Queen Mother’s husband appeared again. “You are now King of the Sun,” he told him. “Is there anything you want?”

“I want to see my wife,” Hou I said. “You can rub the ring I give you if you want to see your wife,” said the queen mother’s husband.

Hou I rubbed the ring and flew straight to the moon. He soon found his wife. The Queen Mother’s husband came to see him once more.

“Don’t forget you are King of the Sun,” he said “You cannot leave the sun too often. You can only visit your wife on the fifteenth night of every month.”

Hou I was very happy to hear this. From that time on, he came to see his wife once a month. That is why the moon is always very large and bright on that night.

One day, one of Hous I’s friends told him about the “Pill of Everlasting Life” Hou I at once sent his servant to get it for him from the Queen Mother of the West.

The Queen Mother lived by herself on top of a high mountain. She was very ugly. Her teeth were as long and sharp as a tiger’s. she also had nine tails. She spent her time making medicine from grass, leaves and flowers. At first, she did not want to give the pill to Hou I’s servant. When he told her who his master was, she became afraid. She quickly handed it over to him.

“Tell your master that the pill is very strong?” she said. "He must not take it when there’s a full moon. If he does, he will fly straight up to the moon.”

Hou I was very pleased to get the pill. His wife kept it for him in a cupboard in her room.

One night, while she was gazing at the full moon, she suddenly decided to taste the pill. Her body immediately became lighter and her feet left the ground. She began to float up in the sky towards the moon.

When her husband saw her, he tried to shoot her down with his bow and arrow. But she was already too far away. In a short time, she landed on the moon. She felt very cold and lonely. She thought of her husband. Every day and wanted to return to him. But there was no way for her to do so. At last, she built a small house for herself in which she lived all alone.

When the hunter arrived, everyone came out to have a good look at him. They were disappointed to find that he was a small, old man with a bent back. There was a boy of about twelve or thirteen with him.  “Where is the tiger?” the old man asked. No one answered. “let’s go and catch the big cat in the mountain before doing anything else,” the old man said. Again no one replied. He knew that no one wanted to help him so he waited until the next morning. He then told the magistrate what had happened. The magistrate ordered ten young men to take the old man and his boy to the mountain. When they reached the bottom of the mountain, they were afraid to go any further. “Come on!” cried the old man “Don’t be afraid! I will show you how to kill the tiger.”
